Missed the 31 August 2026 ITR Deadline? Know What to Do Now
This may be stressful for taxpayers who missed the ITR filing deadline. If you didn’t file you itr till 31 August 2026, it doesn’t mean that you can’t file your income tax return now. Eligible taxpayers can file their belated income tax return. It is better to file the return as soon as possible without unnecessary delay. However, late filing fees and interest may be applicable

Don’t Panic: You Can Still File a Belated ITR

Missing the deadline does not mean you can no longer file your return. You can still submit what is called a belated return under Section 139(4) of the Income Tax Act. So you still have a few months to file it. It is advisable not to wait until the last date. Gather your income and tax-related documents, check your TDS and tax liability, and file your belated ITR as soon as possible.

Late Filing Fees will be applicable, and Interest may also apply

Under section 234F, the late filing fee is Rs 1000 if your annual income is less than Rs 5 lakh, and it is Rs 5000 if your annual income is above Rs 5 lakh, separate from any other interest or tax you pay.
The interest applicable on your ITR depends on the amount of outstanding tax liability. Therefore, it is better to file your ITR as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary additional interest on the outstanding amount. The longer you delay filing your ITR, the more interest may continue to accumulate on the outstanding tax liability. Therefore, it is better to file your ITR as soon as possible to avoid additional interest.

Simple Way to File Your ITR After the Due Date

If you have missed the original ITR filing deadline, you can follow these steps to file your belated Income Tax Return:
✓ Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal and log in with your credentials.
✓ Select the relevant Assessment Year, such as AY 2026-27 for FY 2025-26 income.
✓ Choose the correct ITR form based on your income sources.
✓ Check your income, TDS, deductions, advance tax and other details carefully.
✓ Verify your information with Form 26AS, AIS and TIS.
✓ Calculate any outstanding tax, applicable interest and late filing fee.
✓ Pay the outstanding tax amount, if applicable.
✓ Submit your return as a belated ITR under Section 139(4).
✓ Complete the e-verification process after submitting your return.
✓ Keep the acknowledgement of your filed ITR safely for future reference.

Complete Your ITR Filing with E-Verification

Filing your ITR is not the final step. After submitting your return, you must complete the e-verification process to confirm that the return was filed by you. You can generally verify your ITR using available methods such as Aadhaar OTP, bank account, demat account, or other permitted options. If you do not complete verification within the applicable time, your return may not be treated as a validly filed return. Therefore, always complete e-verification promptly after submitting your ITR.
