To enable Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) or Tax Collection at Source (TCS), remittance of TDS payments, and issuance of TDS certificates, obtaining a TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) is mandatory.

A TAN is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric number issued by the Income Tax Department through Form 49B. It is compulsory for all individuals and entities responsible for TDS/TCS compliance. However, salaried employees not involved in TDS/TCS obligations are not required to obtain TAN.

Once tax is deducted at source, the TAN holder must issue a TDS certificate as proof of deduction and deposit. The TAN must also be quoted in all TDS/TCS challans, returns, and certificates.
