What is MSME Registration?
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) form the backbone of India’s economy by generating employment, fostering innovation, and boosting exports. To support and promote these enterprises, the Government of India offers MSME Registration, enabling businesses to access a wide range of benefits including tax rebates, easier access to loans, subsidies, and other financial incentives.
While MSME Registration is not mandatory, it is highly recommended as it helps businesses establish credibility and avail themselves of multiple government schemes. The registration process can be completed easily through the Udyam Registration Portal.
What is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration is the official certification introduced by the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME). Upon registering on the government’s Udyam portal, enterprises are allotted a unique 12-digit Udyam Registration Number (URN).
This certification enables businesses to avail themselves of exclusive government schemes, subsidies, financial support, and priority in government tenders. Since July 2020, Udyam Registration has replaced Udyog Aadhaar, making it the only valid process for MSME Registration in India.
MSME Classification
The classification of MSMEs is based on their investment in plant & machinery/equipment and annual turnover. Below is the updated criteria:
- Manufacturing Sector
- Micro Enterprises: Investment ≤ ₹25 lakh
- Small Enterprises: Investment between ₹25 lakh – ₹5 crore
- Medium Enterprises: Investment between ₹5 crore – ₹10 crore
- Service Sector
- Micro Enterprises: Investment ≤ ₹10 lakh
- Small Enterprises: Investment between ₹10 lakh – ₹2 crore
- Medium Enterprises: Investment between ₹2 crore – ₹5 crore

Difference between MSME & Udyam Registration
Earlier, MSMEs were registered through Udyog Aadhaar at the state level, often requiring manual documentation. However, from July 2020 onwards, the Government launched the Udyam Portal for a centralized, simplified, and fully online registration process.

Eligibility for MSME Registration
Any entity meeting the MSME turnover and investment criteria can apply, including:
- Individuals, Startups, and Entrepreneurs
- Sole Proprietorships
- Partnership Firms
- Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
- Private & Public Limited Companies
- Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Co-operative Societies, and Trusts
Documents Required for MSME / Udyam Registration
- Business Constitution Proof: MoA & AoA, Partnership Deed, or Trust Deed (as applicable).
- Business Address Proof:
- Recent utility bill (telephone, mobile, electricity, or gas – not older than 2 months).
- If rented: Notarized Rent Agreement + No-Objection Certificate (NOC).
- If self-owned: Registered title deed of the premises.
- Business Licenses & Clearances: Copies of approvals from local authorities (e.g., Municipal Corporation, Electricity Board).
- Financial Documents: Purchase/sales bills and machinery invoices.

The registration process is completely free of cost on the government portal, making it highly accessible for startups, small businesses, and entrepreneurs.
